ALL DECKED OUT
Some people collect Christmas stories the way other people collect ornaments. Designer Paul Cooper, who decks out every last foot of his 1904 Queen Anne Revival in Hartford’s historic West End every year for the holidays, does both.
Here’s one for starters: Several years back, in the weeks before Christmas, Cooper found an Italian limited-edition nativity scene, carved by hand, in a New York showroom. It was the last set available, and he was excited to have it.
THE NEW 18th-CENTURY HOMESTEAD
It’s a concept that has proven wildly successful in the automotive industry, so it was bound to happen in the home construction market. Build retro-style houses with contemporary amenities for a blend of yesterday’s charm and today’s convenience. .
A CHRISTMAS COLLECTION
For Juli Postol of Woodbury, Christmas begins shortly after Thanksgiving when dozens of boxes are carried down from the attic and she carefully begins unwrapping all 2,000-plus ornaments.
RED HOT MICHAEL LOMBARDI
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I went to meet actor Michael Lombardi at his home in Roxbury. Entertaining
There is an easier way to get the flavor of outdoor cooking year-round than having to shovel the grill out from under the snow while guests are sipping red wine and nibbling hors d'oeuvres in the warm shelter of a house.

Color Trends
Of all the entries in the homeowner dictionary, one small word manages to strike fear in the hearts of homeowners. Say the word “color,” and watch the pigment drain from their faces. Those who decide to brave the spectrum alone often wish they hadn’t.

Gardens
As days grow shorter, a rising pressure moves into your chest. You spent all summer growing this Thai basil from a tiny plug, and any minute now a cold snap is going to turn it to black mush. But there’s so much basil you just can’t think what to do with it – how many mozzarella-and-tomato sandwiches can you possibly eat this week?

Favorite Spaces
Many people have a special place which can evoke a happy memory. For architect and sculptor Tim Prentice of Cornwall that place is the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven. As Prentice states, “If architecture is the ‘thoughtful making of spaces,’ then the Yale Center for British Art fills the bill perfectly.”
